Sustainability

Our brand ethos focuses on ensuring our products last a lifetime. Our garments and accessories are made to last, so they can be passed down and cherished through many hands, lives and generations. We ensure that each piece undergoes rigorous quality control measures, down to the last stitch, to deliver a future heirloom.

A key feature of our products is where they come from. Our leather and suede are ethically sourced from Australian and New Zealand Sheep, supporting local farms and minimising our carbon footprint as much as possible.  As our planet faces severe challenges from climate change and global warming, we know that it is more important than ever to implement natural and renewable resources into our production process.

Our role in Slow Fashion

Australians buy almost 15kg of clothes every year and most of it ends up in landfill, making Australia one of the highest consumers of textiles per capita in the world. Combating these fast fashion practices has always been our priority at Wendy Murray Designs. By purchasing from our made-to-order collection, you are supporting slow fashion practices, as each coat is lovingly crafted after you place an order, never before. We do this to ensure that we are only creating what we know we will sell, to ensure that all of our items end up in a customers loving hands, rather than in a landfill.

Cost-per-wear is a term that has been introduced as an aspect of the circular fashion economy. The concept is simple; the cost of the item divided by the number of times you wear it. As our pieces are impeccably made from durable materials, we know that they can be worn and loved over and over again. Our hope is that our customers will consider this concept when purchasing our products.

The fast fashion industry not only threatens the environment but also the lives of those who are employed to produce them. We consistently monitor the studio conditions where our pieces are made and ensure that the safety and well-being of employees always take precedence. We make all of our products on Australian soil to ensure we do our part in minimising global fast fashion practices.

The Future

Technology for producing ethical faux leather is improving, however, the majority of it does contain a large portion of polyurethane. Polyurethane is harmful to the environment as its production releases toxins that damage ecosystems. It also takes millions of years to break down, which only damages the environment. This is why Wendy Murray Designs rejects the use of Faux Leather in our products until the current technology improves.

We are constantly evolving and looking to improve our sustainability including the eventual development of a sustainable leather alternative. We are always open to our wonderful customer's suggestions and ideas of how we can improve. Please do not hesitate to email info@wendymurraydesign.com if you wish to share with us.

Ultimately, our pieces are designed to put positivity into the world from the start of their creation process. We hope that your Wendy Murray piece makes you feel beautiful and special as we know you are!
